Older adults with dementia are four to five times more likely to fall than older people who do not have cognitive impairment. For those who fall, the risk of sustaining a fracture is three times higher than for cognitively well people. Those who fall are more likely to have long term consequences such as hospitalization, disability, or death. People with Parkinson’s disease, vascular and Lewy body dementia are more prone to mobility disturbances. Incorporating evidenced based assessments and increasing awareness and understanding of the modifiable risk factors can contribute to decreased falls in client populations. |
