Heart disease remains the number one killer amongst Americans. Heart attacks are responsible for 500,000 deaths every year in the U.S. alone and most of the deaths occur within the first hour of the attack. This means it is critical that treatment is started as soon as possible. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack is the first step to getting the right help in a timely manner. The in-home aide will be able to describe the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and other common life-threatening conditions such as stroke and pulmonary embolism. Emergency measures to be taken will also be discussed.

The Aide’s Role in Hearing and Other Sensory/Communication Disorders

At least 1 in 6 Americans currently has a sensory or communication impairment or disorder. Even when they are temporary or mild, such disorders can affect physical and mental health. An impaired ability to communicate with others can also lead to other issues such as: social isolation, unmet health needs or problems at work or home. The aide will learn about the various types of sensory and communication impairments, how they affect our patients and things the aide can do to assist the patient in dealing with these impairments.

The Aide’s Role in Prevention of Food Borne Illnesses: What You’ve Always Wanted to Know!

Even though the US food supply is among the safest in the world, there are organisms that you can’t see, smell, or taste everywhere in the environment. These microorganisms – called pathogens – can invade food and cause illness, sometimes severe and even life-threatening illness, especially in young children, older adults, and persons with weakened immune systems. By attending this in-service, the aide will learn about the most common organisms, the signs and symptoms if food poisoning and foods high risk patient should avoid. Food safety tips will also be discussed.

The Future of Coding With ICD-10 for Home Care and Hospice

Learn what you need to do to start planning for this change which takes effect in October 2013.

The ICD coding system is receiving a major overhaul and has expanded the number of diagnoses from over 14,000 options to over 69,000 options.  Codes are expanding from up to 5 numerical characters to up to 7 alpha-numerical characters.  The change will involve the reeducation of staff, physicians and IS modifications.

This program will provide attendees with overview of the ICD-10 Coding Classification System.  Reviewed will be the similarities and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10.   Since this is such a massive initiative, time will be spent on what agencies need to do to begin planning.

These changes impacts multiple departments from Administration, Billing, QI, IS, Medical Records etc.  Discussed will be some of the education needed for different staff and methods for training.

Also reviewed will be the similarities and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10 as well as basics on how to code using ICD-10.

The Aide’s Role in Detection & Prevention of Patient Abuse: What Would/Should You Do?

Home care patients are at particular risk for abuse and neglect. The elderly, disabled and young patients are the most vulnerable. One report suggested that between 1.5 and 2 million adults older than 60 years of age are abused annually in the United States. The aide will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect and what they should do about it. They will also learn how to protect themselves from possible accusation.
